The Recovery Kit You Actually Need
Every rig rolling into a trailhead these days is dragging a recovery board, a kinetic rope, a winch, a set of traction mats, and a hi-lift jack bolted to the bumper like a trophy. Half of that gear will never get used, and the half that would have mattered is usually the piece left at home. Recovery kit isn't about buying everything in the catalog — it's about knowing which failure you're actually likely to have, on the terrain you actually run.
Match the kit to the mud, not the magazine
A hi-lift jack earns its keep on rock and in deep snow, where you need lift, not pull. It is close to useless in the kind of greasy clay mud that swallows a tire to the axle — there's nothing solid underneath to jack against, and you'll spend twenty minutes building a base out of logs before the jack does anything. If your season is mostly desert wash and rock ledges, the jack rides high on your priority list. If it's spring mud season in the hardwoods, put that weight budget into traction boards instead.

The kinetic rope earns its space, the tow strap doesn't
A static tow strap is for towing — a vehicle under its own power, moving, just needs help getting up a grade. It is the wrong tool for pulling a stuck rig out of a hole, because a static strap either snaps your recovery points off the frame or snatches the towing vehicle to a dead stop the instant the line comes tight. A kinetic recovery rope is built to stretch and store energy, then release it gradually, which is what actually breaks a stuck tire loose from suction mud or a sand berm. If you're only going to carry one length of nylon, make it kinetic. Keep the static strap for what it's actually for — towing a running vehicle home.
Never attach a kinetic rope to a hitch ball receiver on either end. A ball can shear off and become a projectile under load. Rated recovery points only, on both vehicles.
Traction boards live within arm's reach, not under everything else
The single most common mistake with traction boards isn't buying the wrong ones — it's stowing them somewhere that takes ten minutes to excavate once you're actually stuck. If you have to unload a cooler, a tent, and a spare fuel can to get to your boards, you'll end up trying to dig the tire out by hand first out of sheer laziness, and that's how a ten-minute recovery becomes a ninety-minute one with the sun going down. Mount them on the roof, the swing-out, or the tailgate — anywhere that's genuinely faster to access than digging.
Air down before you need to, not after
Half the situations that call for a full recovery kit never happen if the tires were aired down before the vehicle got soft. Dropping to 15–18 psi on sand, mud, or loose rock roughly triples your tire's contact patch and lets it flex around obstacles instead of digging into them. The catch is that most people only remember to air down after they've buried a tire once already that day. Make it part of leaving the pavement, the same way you'd check mirrors before pulling out — air down at the trailhead, not at the first stuck.
Know the pull before you need it
The best recovery gear in the world doesn't help if nobody in the group knows how to rig it. Before the season starts, run through an actual kinetic pull with your group at low speed on flat, open ground — not a trailhead crisis. Everyone should know where the recovery points are on every rig in the convoy, not just their own, because the vehicle doing the pulling is rarely the one that owns the kit.
