Choosing a Sleep System
Cold nights don't ruin adventures because the temperature drops — they ruin adventures because the sleep system underneath you wasn't built for the temperature that actually showed up. Picking a bag and pad together, rather than shopping for either one in isolation, is the single biggest lever you have over how well you sleep in the backcountry.
Start With the Pad, Not the Bag
Most people buy a sleeping bag first and treat the pad as an afterthought. That's backwards. Insulation under your body gets compressed by your weight, so a bag's loft does almost nothing to stop ground conduction — the pad is doing that job alone.
- R-value is the number that matters, not thickness or brand reputation. It measures resistance to heat flow, and R-values stack: a summer pad (R 1-2) layered under a three-season pad (R 3-4) gets you into shoulder-season territory without buying a dedicated winter pad.
- For three-season adventures, aim for R 3-4. For anything with a frost warning, go R 5+.
- Foam pads lose almost no R-value to punctures because there's nothing to puncture; inflatable pads pack smaller and insulate better per ounce, but carry a repair kit and know how to use it before you need to at 2 a.m.
Match the Bag's Rating to Your Coldest Realistic Night
A bag's "comfort" rating (look for the EN/ISO number, not just a marketing label) is where an average sleeper stays comfortable, and "limit" is survivable-but-cold. Buy for comfort, not limit — the gap between the two is bigger than it looks on a spec sheet.
- Plan around the coldest low you're likely to see on the adventure, not the average. Mountain valleys pool cold air overnight and routinely run 10-15°F below the forecast for the nearest town.
- If you run cold, shop one bag-rating tier warmer than the adventure's expected low. If you run hot, you can shave a tier, but do it deliberately rather than by accident.
- Down compresses smaller and insulates better per ounce than synthetic, but loses almost all loft when wet. In consistently damp or coastal conditions, a synthetic bag or a down bag with a hydrophobic treatment is the safer default.
Fit Changes the Math
A bag that's too roomy has more dead air for your body to heat, which measurably drops its real-world warmth. A mummy cut sized close to your body sleeps warmer than a rectangular bag with the same fill weight. If you're between sizes, size down before you size up.
Build the System, Don't Just Stack Gear
The bag and pad only work as advertised when the rest of the system supports them.
- A liner adds a genuine 5-15°F depending on material, and it's the cheapest, lightest upgrade available if you're a few degrees short of what an adventure demands.
- Sleep in dry layers, not the clothes you hiked in. Damp base layers pull heat straight off your skin all night, no matter what you're wrapped in.
- Eat something before you get in the bag. Your body needs fuel to generate the heat the insulation is supposed to trap — an empty stomach undercuts even a well-matched system.
- A hat matters more than people expect. A mummy hood traps heat around your head, but a close-fitting beanie underneath closes the gaps a hood alone leaves open.
If you wake up cold in the middle of the night, don't just add a layer and go back to sleep — check the ground under you first. A flattened or under-inflated pad is the most common silent failure in an otherwise correct sleep system, and no amount of bag is going to fix a cold seeping up from underneath.
Test Before You Need It
Never carry a new sleep system's maiden voyage into a remote adventure. Do one cool-weather backyard or car-camping night first, close to your actual bailout options, so you learn where your personal comfort line sits relative to the rating on the tag — that number is a lab average, and your own baseline is the only rating that actually predicts your next adventure.
